Today we speak about
Flave start-up, an interesting emerging reality inside
food & beverage sector that delivers gourmet experiences curated by
Michelin Star chefs. We had the chance to interview the whole team, who eventually provide us an
all-time preview unveiling their next milestone: the launch of a reward-based crowdfunding campaign on November, 2017.
1. What is Flave, and how does it work?
«Flave is an online food company based in Lausanne, that delivers gourmet experiences curated by the world's leading chefs, simply to your doorstep through monthly subscription boxes. Delivering superior quality products not readily available to the general public as well as tools absent from most kitchens.
Flave was born because we have seen the image of the gourmet Chef has drastically changing in the last 10 years. Before, Chefs were seen as crafts men, which were meant to follow strict guidelines to be classified as high-end. Today, they are perceived as artists expressing their interpretation of seasonal products. This shift has allowed the idolization of some, generating a new wave of curiosity, adoration and trust in a Chef's interpretation.
The shift in stigma surrounding them and the emergence of readily available cooking channels has spawned individuals increased interest in developing their cooking know-how and excitement towards high quality ingredients. Unfortunately, many talented Chefs are unable to maximize their potential reach and share the philosophy embedded in their cooking. Flave brings Chefs and passionate home cooks together, by not only sending out gourmet boxes but also sharing the story of the Chef as well as recipes through video content. Broadening the Chef's reach and levelling-up the end-users cooking».
2. Who are the founders and how is the team divided?
«
Our founding team is composed by 3 core members:
Pascal Vilhelmsson,
Chris Bader and
Giovanni Tuccari. All three of us are last year students at the
Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, the world's leading
Hospitality University.
The strength of our team comes from the unification of an
excellent academic education paired with extensive working experience within the industry, and a
distinct multicultural background. In fact, Pascal has Swiss-Swedish origins, however lived in Dubai for 10 years; Chris who was born and raised in Singapore but actually has Swiss-Filipino roots & Giovanni comes from Italian-Hungarian parents, yet received a British education. This diversity not only allows the team to have a
deep understanding of the various cultural obstacles tied to a globalised market, but also enables Flave to leverage on the founders'
extended network.
The team is dived as following.
Pascal directs the Operational side of Flave, due to his experience in the
Sales Operations team of
Snapshot. During this experience he was able to learn the tools linked to
customer validation and
big data management, empowering the company to fully capitalize on the incoming information. After overlooking the Asian expansion of the
Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne,
Chris developed strong communication and advertisement skills which enabled him to tackle the role of
Head of Marketing. His artistic vain for Music is also further reflected in the utilization of social media channels, which are key to gauge today's young markets.
Giovanni has a divided background, having had hands on experience as a cook for Chef
Carlo Cracco (
2 Michelin Star in Milan), but also a white collar position for the
Structured Export Finance team of
Intesa Sanpaolo Bank in London. This diversification allows him
to take care of the culinary aspect as well as the finances of the company».
3. Why have you decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign, and which model are you using?
«We decided
to launch a reward-based crowdfunding campaign for 2 main reasons. Firstly,
to be able to get Flave's name out on the market and allowing it to gain traction. Secondly, our aim is
to raise funds through the sale of our products so to finance the coming costs linked to production, storage and legal expenditures as well as setting up the infrastructure for Flave's e-Commerce website».
4. When are you thinking to launch the campaign, and how will you keep in touch with the backers once the campaign will be over?
«
For the crowdfunding campaign Flave has partnered with Francesco Gasbarro a 1 Michelin Star Chef and Owner of
La Bottega in Geneva. With the aim
to bring exquisite Italian ingredients to individuals across Europe.
The campaign will be launched on Indiegogo at the beginning of November 2017 with a goal set to € 10,000.00, so to be able to deliver the Flave boxes by Christmas.
After that,
we aim to continue our operations immediately at the beginning of 2018, launching the second official box between January and February. This will give our
backers the chance to jump straight into our offering, eliminating the long waiting times usually tied to crowdfunding start-ups.
We have some interesting names lined up!».
5. Who is your competition in Italy* and the rest of the world?
«Now, we are all living
a massive shift towards digital purchasing, especially in the
food & beverage world. As of today the market for food boxes is facing
a focus on fresh products. In the one hand, we can observe this happening particularly in the US, with companies like:
Blue Apron or
Hello Fresh.
In Europe, on the other hand
there is still a lot of room for growth for young and innovative start-ups in the 'cooking industry'. Nevertheless,
Flave is partnering with Chefs to propose an offer never seen before. One of our goals is t
o create a culinary web, where people interested in eating higher quality products have the opportunity to connect with the best producers chosen by the best culinary artists. As simple as that».
6. What are the next steps for Flave?
«The priority for Flave is to successfully go forward with its crowdfunding campaign. Thereafter, we will put in place our business model by initiating the first round of Chefs. This should allow Flave to create enough inventory to launch its e-Commerce website. In fact, we aim to deliver superior quality products also on an On Demand basis, giving the opportunity to our users to re-purchase their favourite items.
In addition, we plan to put in act a relocation strategy by June 2018, so to position Flave's headquarters in one of the large European capitals. This will drive costs down and locate the company in the optimal environment to foster future growth».
